Oration Submission Guideline – 25th Annual Scientific Congress 2023

SRI LANKA COLLEGE OF PAEDIATRICIANS

25TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC CONGRESS 2023

13th to 16th May 2023 - Hotel Galadari Colombo

Guidelines for Submission

Professor C. C. De Silva Memorial Oration & Dr. Stella G. De Silva Memorial Oration

General considerations

These are prestigious orations held under the auspices of the College and are awarded to the two best manuscripts submitted each year. The submissions must be made before the stipulated closing date. No submissions received after the closing date would be entertained even for consideration. There is no “carry-over” of submissions from one year to another.

The orations are awarded to narratives, which mainly consist of research undertaken by the prospective orator. Extensive reviews of available literature with very little or no research data from work done by the prospective orator would not be considered for selection.

The specific procedure to be followed in formulating the submissions: –

  • Five printed copies of the manuscript should be submitted. The manuscripts should not have the name or affiliations of the submitter. The text should be printed in a single-column format on one side of the paper only. The College would appreciate loose plastic binding of the manuscript.
  • A separate letter providing the name of the submitter, affiliations, addresses, title of the manuscript and contact telephone number should be sent with the manuscript.
  • The manuscript should be prepared in Times New Roman font size 12 or Arial font size 12. The page settings should leave 2.5-centimetre margins right round. The line spacing should be set to 1.5 in the paragraph settings. Bold and Italic text may be used to highlight important components of the text. Underlining should be avoided completely.
  • The pages should be numbered with the page number being inserted at the bottom right hand corner.
  • The manuscript should be formulated EXACTLY as it would be presented following selection after evaluation. It should be prepared in an attractive presentation style as a narrative of a composite presentation. The major component of the proposed presentation should consist of research work undertaken by the prospective orator, either alone or in collaboration with others. However, it is suggested that the research work is presented in a descriptive narrative format rather than in the layout of a heavily structured research paper style.
  • Submissions of just a collection of research publications or research papers without them being harnessed into a composite presentation would not be considered. However, published research papers may be provided as annexures.
  • The submissions would be judged on the manuscripts submitted. There is no facility provided for revision of the manuscript or re-submissions beyond the closing date.
  • Non-compliance with these guidelines is likely to lead to the rejection of the manuscript.

Evaluation

A Sub-Committee appointed by the Council of the College would undertake the evaluation of the submissions. Each member would perform the assessment individually.

The final decision would be reached at a meeting of the Sub-Committee where a consensus opinion would be established. The committee will then make recommendations to the Council regarding the selections.

Deadline

The manuscript should reach the Hony. Secretary, SLCP on or before 4 pm, 10th March  2023. There will be no extensions of this deadline.

Dr. B.J.C. Perera Research Prize Oration

The Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians has commenced this oration in recognition of the contributions made to the College by Dr. B.J.C. Perera, the first President of the College.

Generally scientific orations are awarded to manuscripts which include several research studies on a broad topic undertaken by the prospective orator. They are usually a conglomeration of quite a few research initiatives on a central theme, preferably published in peer-reviewed journals. They are usually not awarded to single studies UNLESS the study has ground-breaking new information that has implications on investigative or treatment strategies.

A Research Prize Oration is designed to provide an opportunity for a researcher to present outstanding work that includes the results of even a single research project which has value in epidemiological evaluation, investigation, or management of patients with a given disorder. However, several projects on a given subject too may be considered provided they are intimately related and are of high-quality scientific rigor.

The submitted manuscript is expected to use scientific data formulated into a presentable narrative and not strictly structured like a scientific original article published in a peer-reviewed journal. However, sub-headings could be used whenever appropriate, bold and italic print may be employed to stress certain statements, but underlining should be avoided. It is recommended that there be an Introduction or Background followed by the main body of the presentation which would include details of the study or studies, a discussion including implications of the findings, and ending up with conclusions, recommendations, and acknowledgements. Tables, figures, and photographs may be used to advantage to provide an attractive outlook. A list of references should be provided at the end and whenever data is used in the body of the manuscript, the relevant publication listed in the references needs to be cited at the appropriate point in the text. Vancouver style is the preferred format for the reference list. The entire presentation should be designed to simulate an attractive scientific story. The narrative is best assembled to last for 35 to 40 minutes when presented to an audience.

The submission manuscript should be assembled in Microsoft WORD, typed single sided in size 12 font in either Times New Roman or Arial with line spacing of 1.5 and margins of 0.8 inches (2.0 cm) right round. Consecutive page numbers should be inserted at the lower right-hand corner of each page. A total of five copies should be submitted out of which one copy should have the name and affiliations of the author and four copies should be without the name and affiliations of the author.

The main goal of the establishment of this enterprise is to appreciate, facilitate and promote good, well-conducted research, which would have key implications for child health care.

The oration would be advertised, and selection made on a competitive basis.
